Up on the Roof
To live in a townhouse with a rooftop garden, nestled in a picturesque city by the sea, is my dream. So naturally, that’s what I set out to create in the imaginary doll world of The Peculiar Fleurette.
The design plan: inspired by the 1983 Sindy Super Home dollhouse, I had a carpenter make two units that could be combined together to make one large house.
The rooftop was the first space in the dollhouse that I… er… um… I mean, Fleurette, had a very clear vision for. She wanted a small garden for connecting to the natural world (because city living can be intense, even for dolls), a patio terrace for quiet cups of morning coffee and daydreaming, and a plunge pool for cooling off on hot days. And as things happen to work in fairyland, the plunge pool can transform into a hot tub on a whim, depending on the season and storyline. Stay tuned.
Fleurette envisioned a cozy, yet stylish space to relax and unwind. She kindly requested mature and fully grown privet bushes to enclose the area for privacy, and then she handed me an extensive list of trees, plants and flowers for beautifying the space. Bougainvillea was top on the list for achieving that Mediterranean feel she so adores! So, off to the craft store I went to pick out only the very best in faux flora for Fleurette.
Lots of hot glue and flora foam helped to complete the basic hardscape and landscape. She chose a glass greenhouse and furnished it with a cozy wicker chair and table, and then for the patio terrace a plastic white wicker set from the 1983 Barbie Dream Furniture Collection (because vintage style is forever). And lastly she decided on the très chic Rainbow High Color Change Pool lounge set.
After months and months of being stored away in a fashion case (because her human had moved cross-country and was spiraling from stress), Fleurette was grateful to breathe fresh air again, and to have a secret garden of her own where she could finally stretch her tiny dolly limbs. It’s the perfect spot for all the doll and fairyland friends to gather while they patiently wait for each interior room to be completed.
